WebRacing™ Roadtested at BT Paralympic World Cup

Competitors, spectators and even local school children will be trying out ‘virtual training’ in the form of WebRacing™ at this year’s BT Paralympic World Cup. The concept integrates state of the art web technology with fitness machinery such as bikes, rowers and cross trainers and is set to become one of the most favoured methods of training for both competing and recreational athletes.

The BT Paralympic World Cup takes place in Manchester between 20th and 25th May and the WebRacing™ team has been invited along to demonstrate the equipment prototype. The concept of WebRacing™ allows the user to view themselves as a virtual racer on some of the most famous race tracks on the international circuit with cheering crowds and lifelike scenery for ultimate authenticity.

Duncan Lawson from the WebRacing™ team explains more, "WebRacing™ combines fitness with gaming, providing the user with a totally interactive experience which increases motivation. As the user is kept mentally engaged, they are likely to burn more calories and achieve greater muscle tone than with a less inspiring training session."

"It’s a real honour for us at the WebRacing™ team to be invited to the BT Paralympic World Cup" says Lawson, "Our aspiration is that WebRacing™ will soon be available for everyone, but it’s important for us to get feedback from world class athletes in the early stages to ensure that we develop the program to the highest possible standards. I hope that many of the athletes will integrate WebRacing" into their training and that our machines will play a part in preparing them for London 2012."

The event will see bikes racing in parallel allowing users to compete against each other; and, for the first time ever, a rower set up with a disabled seat and a wheelchair set on rollers to allow wheelchair users to compete in bike races. The equipment will be connected to a big screen allowing both users and spectators to see all the action as it happens.
